With the help and encouragement from Acme Accordion School founder (Westmont, NJ) Stan
Darrow, accordionists Joe Oberly and Joe Alexander formed the Delaware Accordion Club (DAC) in October
1998. The members appointed Joe Oberly as the first DAC President, a role he would proudly
serve for the next 17 years. Joe Alexander assumed the positions of club Secretary, Treasurer, and Editor of
the DAC newsletter.
As membership grew, meeting locations changed throughout the Wilmington DE area to
accommodate more players and listeners. The club has met in banquet rooms, diners, coffee shops, and
restaurants. Most recently, we have been having our monthly meetings in the community room of the River
Club Apartments (Claymont DE).
Our meetings begin with a brief update and then musicians take turns playing. It's an
"open-mic" setting where club members and guests offer an encouraging, no pressure environment. Whether
beginner or professional, everyone is welcome at the Delaware Accordion Club.
In late 2016, we lost DAC President Joe Oberly as he peacefully passed away surrounded by
his family. His legacy continues to share the instrument, music, and club he love so much.
In 2017, DAC Treasurer and Secretary Susan Shertok was named the second President of the
Delaware Accordion Club. Susan's infectious personality and never-ending encouragement is the foundation of
the club. She joined DAC in 2001 and has inspired others to attend and join the club, as well as her
commitment to sharing our instrument and music in the community.
Everyone is welcomed to attend our meetings; whether to play or listen. We welcome all
styles and genres and look forward to hearing and learning from members with so many different
backgrounds and experiences. Family and friends are important to us and all are welcome to attend.
Welcome to the Delaware Accordion Club!
