Joseph Roy Oberly, Jr.

AGE: 71 • New Castle

Joseph Roy Oberly, Jr. of New Castle, Delaware passed away peacefully on September 29, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Joe was 71. He was born to the late Joseph R., Sr., and Catherine Brady Oberly. Joe was fondly remembered as Karate Joe and Accordion Joe, and was a retired tree surgeon after 31 years with the New Castle County's Forestry Department. Joe served in the U.S. Army Special Forces as a Green Beret. He was a Master Mason, Lafayette Lodge #14, Scottish Rites 33°; and also held a 2nd degree Black Belt in Kempo Karate. Joe was President of the Delaware Accordion Club, and the founding father of the Delaware Antique Police Car Association. Joe was an avid supporter of the law enforcement community, passionate about animal rescue, and extremely devoted to his family and friends. He was soft spoken, filled with kindness and a man with gentle strength, who was beloved by many. Survived by two daughters: Tanyell Oberly Dell'Oso (Vito); Jody Oberly Weaver (Steve); and a son: Andy Oberly (Amanda); 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and brothers: Frank (Linda); and John (Karen); and sisters: Patricia Weik (Smokey) and MaryLou Logan (Bill). Viewing and service to begin at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel; 2220 N. DuPont Highway; New Castle, DE, with burial to immediately follow.
